St. Petersburg: printed at the Imp. Ros. Academy, 1826. - 291 p., 3 sheets. map
A rare publication about the Russian fleet. The book tells about the events of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790, the main episodes of which took place at sea. The outbreak of the war for dominance in the Baltic turned out to be for Russia, which was at war with Turkey at that time, a test of the navy of our country, the ability to defend the integrity of its territory and wage war on two fronts in a difficult international situation, with significant opposition from the Western European powers. Swedish aggression was largely a surprise. "In the spring of 1788, a secret, carefully kept until now, was suddenly revealed, which, by its suddenness, disturbed victorious Russia for some time ...". The author of this book is one of the Russian commanders in the war against Sweden. He is hidden behind the initials "A.Sh.", that is, Alexander Shishkov. A.S. Shishkov (1754-1841) - a prominent statesman and public figure. He served in the Naval Cadet Corps, during the Russian-Swedish War he acted under the command of the illustrious Admiral Vasily Yakovlevich Chichagov (1726-1809), distinguished himself in key battles of the campaign, commanded the ship "Saint Nicholas", participated in the victorious battle of Krasnogorsk in May 1790 against the Duke Südermanland (the future King Charles XIII). In the late 1790s, A.S. Shishkov is in the rank of admiral. The rise of Shishkov's career occurred during the reign of Emperor Paul I (however, his temporary estrangement from the court and his engagement in literature and social activities occurred during the same period). Under Paul, he was sent to the Black Sea Fleet. Alexander Semyonovich Shishkov - author of a significant number of works on the history of Russian naval affairs, compiler of the Marine Dictionary in three languages (English, French and Russian); was in the honorary position of historiographer of the fleet. The patriot, an active participant in the Russian Academy, created with the support of Catherine II, devoted a lot of time and effort to studying Russian literature, organizing literary evenings and helping writers. The presented edition will do honor to the collection of books on the history of the Russian fleet and naval art. At the end of the book is a dictionary of sea words and expressions used in the description of battles, and three sheets of maps. Rare antique book.
