Ch. 1: Hard labor. 438 pp.: ill..
In 1897, with the help of the Odessa List, the famous writer-journalist Vlasiy Mikhailovich Doroshevich (1865–1922) undertook a trip to Sakhalin and wrote a number of essays on the Sakhalin hard labor, which were first published as a separate book in 1903 in Moscow. The publication describes the Sakhalin order and the inhuman brutality of both those who are exiled and, often, those who uncontrollably control the life and death of convicts. In addition to general characteristics, Doroshevich also gives a number of psychological portraits of colorful criminals and officials. The book “Sakhalin” occupies one of the first places in a number of materials for studying the criminal world of the late 19th century and is one of the few early works about Sakhalin.
