This book is about the work of one of the strongest grandmasters in the world, the Hungarian chess player Lajos Portisch. In addition to the essay on Portisch traditional for this series and a selection of his best games, the book contains materials that illustrate L. Portisch's contribution to the theory of openings and are of particular interest.

In this book, the author sought to reveal the twenty-year history of the chess career of one of the outstanding Hungarian masters, to show that Lajos Portisch today continues the traditions of the Hungarian chess school, the founders of which are considered to be Johann Jakob Leventhal and Geza Maroczy. How far the author has succeeded is to be judged by a strict, experienced and knowledgeable Soviet reader.
