In this book, the author has set himself the goal of presenting in a popular form some questions regarding chess psychology, counting on a wide range of chess fans. Krogius' work was published in 1967, and by that time chess practice had accumulated a considerable amount of certain psychological knowledge and techniques that many players at the board had adopted.

However, this material was not generalized in any way and was not the property of the general chess community, only some of its representatives kept information about psychology in chess in their arsenal thanks to many years of experience, which noted specific patterns in preparation and play. In an attempt to open up this topic in his literary work, the author tells about some features of thinking and attention in a chess game so that the reader can more clearly determine his advantages and disadvantages in the face of an opponent.
