A figure of the “Silver Age” of Russian culture, the closest associate of D.S. Merezhkovsky and Z.N. Gippius and a strong opponent of the church policies of the tsarist government, after the February Revolution, became chief prosecutor of the Synod, and then the last minister of religions of the Provisional Government. Having experienced in practice not only the taste of power, but also the bitterness of its deprivation, he spent more than half a century reflecting on the lessons of what he had seen and done already in exile. The final book was published in France when its author was over ninety, but nevertheless it is completely unique even among emigrant historiosophical literature for its undying faith that the country will find the path to its spiritual resurrection.
