The political testament of the founder of the German Empire, written, as the dedication says, “to his sons and grandsons for understanding the past and as instruction for the future.” Bismarck began writing his extensive, three-volume memoirs shortly after his forced resignation in 1890. Having retired to the Saxon Forest, on one of his estates, he fought from there against the so-called “new course” taken by the young Wilhelm II and the new chancellor Caprivi. Overwhelmed by anxiety for the fate of the empire in the creation of which he took such a large part, offended by his resignation, dissatisfied and in opposition, he devoted the last years of his life to drawing up a political testament. Looking back, summing up the results of his long-term political activity, Bismarck tried not only to justify it to his contemporaries, but also to warn, on the basis of his own political experience, his successors from possible mistakes.

The FIRST volume includes the first 18 chapters of the book of memoirs of Otto von Bismarck from the period before the first connecting Landtag and, in chapter 18 - Louis II - King of Bavaria.
