Due to the false modesty of collectors and publishers of Russian folklore, as well as censorship restrictions and persecution, entire layers of folk literature remained unknown. The published texts, despite their sometimes shocking nature, are deeply rooted in the traditional forms of life and consciousness of Russian peasants and reflect a more natural and free attitude towards the sexual and erotic sphere than that which was characteristic of the urban culture of the 19th-20th centuries. Most of the materials included in the volume are published for the first time. They were extracted from the archives of famous folklorists of the 19th and first third of the 20th centuries. (P.V. Kireevsky, brothers B.M. and Yu.M. Simakov, V.I. Simakov, D.K. Zelenin, etc.) or recorded in recent decades by participants in various folklore and ethnographic expeditions. For the first time, texts from the famous collection of Kirsha Danilov, published until now only with significant cuts, will see the light in full. Works of ritual folklore are accompanied by descriptions of family and calendar rituals during which they were performed. Texts are printed in accordance with accepted editorial standards and are accompanied by scientific commentary.
