Elena Grigorieva's book is devoted to one of the basic mechanisms that form and preserve meaning in culture. The author prefers to call this device an emblem, since it is the historical emblem — a drawing with a caption — that most clearly demonstrates the main structural principle of its work.
The emblem is considered both as a specific phenomenon and as a semiotic regularity expressing itself in graphic form. It is a strategy of education and ordering of meaning, which helps to understand the constructive and pragmatic patterns of visual texts of all kinds, whether in "big" art or in an advertisement or propaganda poster.
