The work of Johann Joachim Winckelmann "History of the Art of Antiquity" is the first example of a scientific history of art, which deals not with individual masters, but with art as a whole in its heyday and decline. Not limited to describing the plot and evaluating the reliability of the transmission of nature, the historian tried to characterize the figurative language and artistic features of a particular work, becoming one of the creators of the methodology of art history analysis. The translation, comments and scientific apparatus of the book were prepared by I. E. Babanov (1936-1994) - a researcher of European and Eastern culture, a specialist in antiquity and the Enlightenment. Translator Babanov I.
