Florentin Fedoroiich Pavlenkov is a legendary Russian book publisher, translator and educator, or, as they say today, a cultural trader. In 1890, he conceived and began publishing his most famous series, The Lives of Remarkable Men. During the life of Pavlenkov, 191 books and 40 reprints were published, and the total circulation exceeded one million copies. It was, according to many, the first collection of biographies in Europe, which won tremendous success with readers. Published 100 years ago, almost 200 biographies of famous writers and musicians, philosophers and scientists, generals, inventors and travelers written in the chronicle genre remain to this day a unique information source. The book includes biographies of musicians of all times and nations - Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.
