Lyudmila Mikhailovna Alekseeva (b. 1927) - historian, editor. She participated in human rights protests, starting with the first protests against the arrest and conviction in 1966 of writers A. Sinyavsky and Y. Daniel. She became one of the initiators of providing financial assistance to political prisoners and their families. In February 1977, she emigrated to the USA.
Returned to Russia in 1993. In May 1996, she was elected chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group. From November 1998 to November 2004 - President of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights.
