Anicius Manlius Torquat Severinus Boethius (c. 480–524) was a late Roman writer, philosopher and scientist, head of the office of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great. In the Middle Ages, the works of Boethius served as one of the main sources of philosophical education. The theme of “consoling philosophy” and the theme of “vicissitudes of fortune” passed through the entire Western Middle Ages, finding a place for itself in serious theological treatises, in courtly novels, and in the free poetry of troubadours. These themes entered the everyday life of medieval culture precisely through Boethius, through his most famous work, The Consolation of Philosophy, which for many centuries was the reference book of every educated person in the West. In this work, Boethius defends the freedom of the human spirit, and he assigns an exceptional role in the self-improvement of man to philosophy. The book includes treatises by Boethius: “Commentary on Porphyry”, “How the Trinity is One God, and not three deities”, “Can the “Father”, “Son” and “Holy Spirit” affect the Deity substantially”, “How substances can be good, by virtue of the fact that they exist without being substantial goods”, “Against Eutychius and Nestorius”. The publication ends with an article by Professor Gennady Mayorov “The Fate and Case of Boethius”.
