The Irish, descendants of ancient Celtic tribes, have long inhabited the island of Ireland. Around the fifth century, Christianity spread there, monasteries appeared, which became centers of book culture. They played a huge role in preserving folk tales. The bards and clergy concluded a kind of peace treaty, it is not for nothing that Patrick is a messenger of the Church, Brigid is a pagan goddess, and Columbus is a bard from the royal family - the most revered Irish saints.

Having survived the Viking raids in the eighth to eleventh centuries, then the Norman Conquest, Ireland has retained its rich literary tradition. Celtic folk tales, legends, and songs translated into English had a serious influence on the formation of national literatures of modern times. In the legends, pseudohistory and history, gods and heroes, paganism and Christianity, fairy tale and reality inseparably coexist, telling about significant events in the mythologized history of the Irish people and their national character.
