The `Grettir Saga` is one of the `sagas about the Icelanders` (or `ancestral sagas`), i.e. stories about what happened in Iceland in the so-called `age of sagas` (approximately from 930 to 1030 .). It is one of the most significant and most voluminous works of this genre.
The action of the saga begins at the end of the 9th century. The Norwegian Viking Onund Wooden Leg moves to Iceland because of a conflict with the first king of Norway, Harald Fairhair. The main character is his great-grandson Grettir, the son of Asmund, a renowned strong man and brave man. Grettir was twice outlawed and lived with this legal status, repelling the attacks of his natural enemies, for nineteen years. Enemies were able to defeat him only with the help of sorcery.
Grettir is a man who committed atrocities and, at the same time, a folk hero, whose memory is still alive. He is one of the most beloved characters in contemporary Scandinavia.
