This publication completes the series of collective works begun by the books: "Russian literature of the late XIX - early XX century. Nineties" (Moscow, "Nauka", 1968) and "Russian literature of the late XIX - early XX centuries 1901-1907 " (M., "Spider", 1971).
The general introduction to this entire series is placed in the first of these books.
The pre-October decade is one of the most complex and least studied (in its general patterns) periods history of Russian literature. It was during this period, immediately preceding the Great October Socialist Revolution, that the correlation of artistic trends was completely determined, which still plays a decisive role in the world literary process. The main watershed passed between the developing socialist realism, as well as critical realism, which was undergoing a contradictory evolution, on the one hand, and various currents of modernism, on the other. This work refutes the erroneous idea of the decline of critical realism in the 20th century.
The complexity of this period was also associated with the emergence of new literary groups, publishing houses, magazines, almanacs, literary departments of newspapers, etc., which entered into polemics with each other. other on a number of problems of artistic development and on individual works. This range of materials is covered (year after year, month after month) in the section "Chronicle of literary events".
