The book is based on the famous work of Academician D.S. Likhachev "Textology (based on Russian literature of the X-XVII centuries)", first published in 1962, since then repeatedly reprinted abroad, both in Russian and and translated into foreign languages. Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev himself regarded it as his main scientific work, to the ideas of which he returned throughout his scientific career, but for the first time he formulated them in his doctoral dissertation on the history of Russian chronicle writing, prepared by him in 1947. “The main idea and theme of the dissertation was an attempt to consider the entire history of Russian chronicle writing as the history of a literary genre, which is constantly changing depending on the changing historical and cultural situation. Before me, the problem of changing the types of the chronicle genre was not raised, - D.S. Likhachev wrote later. - A. A. Shakhmatov's methodology for establishing the history of the text of the annals and my experience in the practical work of a proofreader in the publishing house of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the 30s. helped me create a theory of textual criticism as a science that studies the history of the text of works. The book is supplemented with new sections written specifically for this edition by students of D. S. Likhachev, employees of the Department of Old Russian Literature of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which summarized the development of textual science in the last decades of the 20th century.
