In those years when this book appeared and took shape, a lot of people with whom I was closely connected in my youth and in my youth went to emigration, and from the rest, one or the other was sent to the camp, and I wrote stories interspersed with letters to Ostia and Milwaukee, to Perm and Novokuznetsk. But no matter how bitter the time was, it was immeasurably lighter than what our fathers and grandfathers experienced at our age, and it was also under their gaze that I then ran a pen over the paper. That paper was pretty frayed and darkened, and until it completely decayed or the folder with it is not forgotten at some airport or hotel, I decided to transfer its contents to a newer and more official one - and no longer requiring my worries.
