Istvan Erken - Hungarian prose writer and playwright, founder of the Hungarian theater of the absurd. In 1957, being on the "black list" of censorship because of his impudent speeches on the radio and in the press, Erken was forced to write to the table - and this gave him extraordinary freedom. With the help of the grotesque and the absurd, he turned the incredible into the possible, combining subtle lyrics and brilliant satire, he built the fate of his heroes in such a way that it was impossible not to believe him. You can't call the characters of his plays heroes, and their behavior is heroic, they are ordinary people. But these people are capable of strong feelings, they declare their right to personal independence, to the inviolability of their inner life, to human dignity. The plays included in this collection ("Cats and Mice" (1963), "The Family of Tots" (1964)), were written in the form of stories, they became an important milestone in the writer's work - after them they began to print him again. Then they were staged and made Erken a world-famous playwright. In our country, in the 70-80s of the last century, Istvan Erken was considered their playwright by 27 Soviet theaters, the famous productions of Tovstonogov in the Bolshoi Theater entered the history of not only domestic, but also world culture. Nowadays, performances based on Erken's plays are staged at the Moscow Art Theatre. A.P. Chekhov and MODT them. A.N. Ostrovsky.
