The monograph highlights the history of the complex relationship between the Symbolists and mass culture that took shape against the backdrop of the revolutionary transformation of Russian society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A full-fledged study of this issue was difficult in different years for ideological reasons and in connection with the distinction between the culture of the beginning of the last century into “mass-low” and “elitist-high” that did not quite correspond to reality, while the Symbolists were unconditionally classified as the latter. This study shows the role of symbolists as thinkers in shaping the projects of the future and at the same time as authors of new practices of communication with the audience used in popular culture. The author is not limited to symbolism and demonstrates on the example of futurism and V.V. Mayakovsky that these practices were developed by other modernists and, despite their commercial nature, survived after the revolution of 1917. The book is intended for everyone interested in Russian culture and history.
