The name of Nikolai Shmelev is widely known both in our country and abroad. His literary works have been translated into many foreign languages. But popularity came to him at first not as a writer, but as an economist. In 1987, all of Russia read his famous article "Advances and Debts", which gave a solid impetus to discussions about the urgent changes in the Russian economy. Nikolay Shmelev was born in 1936 in Moscow, in the family of an engineer. He began writing prose while still a student. The first story was published in 1961. Then followed 26 years of silence, although he did not stop working "on the table" for a single day. Only in 1987, his story "Pashkov's House" was published in the Znamya magazine, which caused a wave of general admiration. Since then, N. Shmelev has been constantly published, his books have been published. Among them, the story about I. Goethe, P. Brueghel the Elder, N. Pirosmani, as well as the novel about the archpriest of the Annunciation Cathedral Sylvester, who was essentially the first Russian reformer, should be especially noted. The novel "I fell ill on the way" (about three generations of Russian intellectuals) aroused great interest among the public.
