Name of the writer and publicist O.V. Volkov (1900-1996) is known to readers from his autobiographical novel Descent into Darkness, which tells about the 28 years the author spent in Soviet camps and exile. This book presents for the first time Volkov's autobiographical story Under a Horse, written in the 50-60s and transferred by the author to Alexander Tvardovsky for the New World, but which remained unpublished. For the first time, the author's letters, covering the 1920-1960s, to his wife Sophia, the granddaughter of the famous merchant and philanthropist Savva Mamontov, are also being published. The Appendices contain (also for the first time) excerpts from five archival investigative cases in which the OGPU-NKVD arrested an indomitable peer of the 20th century, as well as the memoirs of the writer’s eldest daughter M.O. Ignatchenko. The publication is based on materials from the family archives of the writer’s relatives and friends.
