The book of “Memoirs” of a remarkable scientist, citizen, person, in the exact sense of the word, the son of the 20th century, who shared with him his gains and losses, Academician D .S.Likhacheva. It outgrows the traditional framework of the memoir genre: the author does not aim to resurrect only the events of his own life. Recreating the atmosphere of past years and the history of many human destinies with which he managed to come into contact, D.S. Likhachev encourages the reader to peer into the face of the era, think about its patterns, and learn lessons from the past. The chapters of the book are milestones in Russian history and the history of Russian culture of the 20th century. In his collection “Thinking about Russia,” D.S. Likhachev combined works devoted to the most pressing, from his point of view, problems: the cultural history of Russia, its place in the history of world civilization, myths about it, its national characteristics and most characteristic features. In this regard, the collection included works on the intelligentsia and its role in the preservation of culture, as well as reflections on the principles of restoration of historical and cultural monuments.
