Fernand Grenier is familiar to Soviet readers as the author of a number of works devoted to the heroic struggle of the French Communist Party during the Resistance period, as well as to events in the Soviet Union. His following books were published in Russian: "That's how it was" (1960), "Heroes of Chateaubriand" (1962), "The Soviet Union in the rhythm of the era" (1968). All of them were warmly received by readers.

Grenier's new book "The Diary of a Strange War" is dedicated to a difficult period in the history of France, which still causes sharp controversy between progressive and reactionary historiographers. In numerous bourgeois studies, this period of French history is deliberately falsified.

The book by F. Grenier is a chronicle of events from September 1939 to August 1940, when the author was in the ranks of the French army. It gives a true picture of the life of the country, and especially its army, during the period of complete inactivity of the French government, which practically did not take any measures to organize a rebuff to fascist aggression. The "Diary" reproduces a picture of the anti-Soviet and anti-communist psychosis that reigned at that time in France. From it it is clear that the French government, instead of active actions against Nazi Germany, waged a genuine war against the French Communist Party and pursued a two-faced policy towards the Soviet Union.
