The book "Soldier", written in 1956 by the American General M. Ridgeway, tells in memoir form about the events that the author witnessed and participated in during his long service in the American army. The author tells about the airborne operations of the Anglo-American troops during the Second World War, about the war in Korea (where Ridgway, as you know, was the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the interventionists), about his activities as the supreme commander of the armed forces of the North Atlantic bloc, and then chief of staff of the US Army. Ridgway sets out his views on the current military-political situation and on the problems of warfare in connection with the emergence of weapons of mass destruction. The author analyzes the main issues of the strategy of the United States and NATO countries, the development of the US armed forces now and in the future, as well as the possible nature of a future war, the role and place in this war of certain types of armed forces. Ridgway describes in detail the disagreements between the leading figures of the US Department of Defense, characterizes a number of American military and political figures. The book contains many facts that make it possible to judge the moral character of American generals, officers and soldiers.
