The name of Eduard Herriot is well known to Soviet readers. A prominent French political and public figure, who was repeatedly head of government and minister of the Third Republic, honorary chairman of the National Assembly in the Fourth Republic, leader of the Republican Party of Radicals and Radical Socialists, member of the French Academy, erudite and connoisseur of French and world culture, Edouard Herriot enjoyed a well-deserved recognition and wide popularity not only in their homeland, but also far beyond its borders. For many decades, especially in the period between the two world wars, he was at the very center of major political events in his homeland, and also, to a large extent, of all international political life. He was not only its contemporary and observer, but in many ways also its participant. Among the memoirists of that era, there are few who would be as well aware of all the complex vicissitudes of the political struggle, of its secret hidden springs and behind-the-scenes maneuvers, as Edouard Herriot. He saw a lot and knew a lot. Already from this point of view, his memoirs are of great interest. It would not be an exaggeration to say that anyone who wants to study the development of the political struggle in France, or the history of international relations in the 20-30s of this century, or even just get acquainted with this era, will not be able to pass by Herriot's memoirs.
