The book contains the unpublished and forgotten works of one of the greatest historians of the 20th century. Academician Evgeny Viktorovich Tarle (1874-1955). The texts included in it - they are devoted to the history of Western Europe and Russia of modern times - were written over a period of half a century, from the beginning of the 1900s. Among them are works of great brilliance that remain valuable even today: “Catherine the Second and her diplomacy”, “Three catastrophes”, “England and Turkey”, “M. A. Bakunin, essays on Russian and Western historians. In addition, the book includes Tarle's publicistic articles of 1917, memoirs, reports, speeches at the defense of dissertations. Some of these texts are printed according to the originals stored in the archives, some are extracted from old magazines and newspapers. The volume concludes with vivid and for the first time fully published memoirs about Tarl by his friend, writer and translator E. L. Lann. The book is intended for specialist historians and a wide range of readers interested in history. The works included in the volume cover half a century period, starting from 1900-ies and are devoted to the history of West Europe and Russia. Among them, there are some brilliant works that are still of great scientific significance: Catherine II and her diplomacy, Three catastrophes, Britain and Turkey, M. A. Bakunin, essays devoted to Russian and foreign historians. Besides, the volume presents newspaper articles written in 1917, memoirs, speeches, i. e. the ones made during these defenses. The publication is partly based on original archival texts, whereas other materials have been found in and extracted from old newspapers and journals. The volume also includes E. L. Lann's memoir of E. Tarle's life. The book aims at historians as well as general readership keen on history.
