The book is based on the dramatic biography of Hero of the Soviet Union Anatoly Samochkin, who flew 198 combat missions during the war, most of which on a Su-2 aircraft. In addition, material about many other pilots and navigators of short-range bomber aviation has been collected and summarized, the combat path of the 289th and 209th short-range bomber aviation regiments, as well as correction and reconnaissance squadrons, which were elite specialized units, has been shown. Based on archival documents, memoirs and other sources, the tactics of using short-range bombers in 1941 - 1942 are described in detail, numerous examples of their combat work on the Southern, South-Western, Bryansk and Voronezh fronts are given, the system of rewarding pilots of short-range bomber aviation is analyzed, etc. The book also provides unique details about training methods, procedures and morals in Soviet flying clubs and flying schools in the pre-war period, and tells how the personnel of Soviet bomber regiments was created. The authors answer questions about why the combat survivability of Su-2 aircraft was an order of magnitude higher than that of other types of attack aircraft of the Red Army Air Force, including Il-2 attack aircraft. The myth is debunked that in 1941 the Luftwaffe reigned supreme in the air on the entire Eastern Front, and Soviet aviation everywhere suffered huge losses due to the fact that pilots were allegedly sent into battle poorly trained and unprepared.
