S. Shtemenko began his service in the General Staff in 1940, from 1943 until the end of the war he served as head of the Operations Directorate. His book gives a vivid insight into the nature of the work of the General Staff in wartime. The reader is, as it were, introduced into the laboratory of strategic planning; the role of the Headquarters, the General Staff and the Front Command in the development, planning and conduct of the most important operations of the Great Patriotic War is revealed to him. People, including prominent military leaders, are well described in the memoirs, and the documentary basis of the book is rich. The second book of memoirs continues the story about the activities of the General Staff during the Great Patriotic War. The author focuses on events related to the liberation mission of the Red Army outside the borders of the USSR, with the organization of the joint struggle of the peoples of the liberated countries against Nazi Germany. In a special chapter, the author, based on factual material, reflects on the creative nature of the work of Soviet commanders, on the role of headquarters during the war period.
