The book by the German historian Roman Teppel is based primarily on materials from German archives and the works of German historians and memoirists, many of whom have not yet been accessible to the Russian-speaking reader. He debunks the myths that exist in German and Russian historiography of the Battle of Kursk, relying on documents, letters and diaries contemporary with this event, and not on later memoirs and documents that gave rise to legends. The basis of his work is the journals (diaries) of Wehrmacht combat operations, from army groups to divisions, as well as some surviving minutes of meetings with Hitler, personal diaries and letters of one of the main characters in the Battle of Kursk - Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, who was in command at that time Army Group "South".
