This book is the memoirs of the Soviet intelligence officer Leopold Trepper, who led the activities of the intelligence organization "Red Orchestra" (another name is "Red Chapel"), which operated in European countries before and during the Second World War. His name can rightly be put on a par with the names of the largest Soviet intelligence officers. Now that "blank spots" in the coverage of historical events are gradually disappearing in our country, the Soviet reader can get complete information about a man who honestly fulfilled his duty. When reading a book, one must keep in mind that memories are always subjective and that the author wrote it many years after the events described. He did not have many documents at his disposal, relying on his memory and borrowing something from Western publications, in which the activities of Soviet intelligence were not always covered with due accuracy and objectivity. Therefore, the book contains inaccuracies and distortions, in which the author may not be guilty. For some of them, explanations are given in footnotes, for others - in the afterword. We hope that the Soviet reader will be able to form an objective idea of the feat of the heroes of the "Red Orchestra". The book is addressed to a wide range of readers.
