The novel by Mikhail Nikolaevich Zagoskin (1789-1852) - “Yuri Miloslavsky, or the Russians in 1612” - is one of the first Russian historical novels. It was published in 1829, when the turbulent events of the era - the Patriotic War of 1812, the growth of the liberation movement, the Decembrist uprising - aroused great interest among contemporaries in historical topics. The novel, which was a notable event in the literary life of its time, has not lost interest for the modern reader.
The novel takes place in the 17th century, during the years that went down in Russian history as one of the brightest pages of the struggle for its independence - the organization of the Nizhny Novgorod militia led by Kuzma Minin and D.M. Pozharsky, the liberation of Moscow from interventionists in 1612 and others. Introductory article and notes by B.V. Neumann.
