The seventeenth century - one of the most important eras in the history of world art - was a time of great upsurge for the art school of Holland. A young state that had just gained national independence, Holland, in an unusually short time, moved into the ranks of powerful world powers and the main centers of European artistic culture. Its avant-garde position in the economic, social and artistic life of the era was the result of an abrupt revolutionary shift. The author examines in separate chapters the development of architecture, sculpture, and painting during this period of time. Separate chapters "The Period of Formation (1609-1640)" and "The Period of Heyday (1640-1660s)" are devoted to the most significant areas of painting and artists.
The book is richly illustrated - including reproductions of works by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jan Bepmeep< br />
