Many different books have been written about London. However, there is not yet one where, in essence, “all of London” would be. And this is not accidental, this city of the most complex social relationships and contrasts, an unusually diverse way of life and way of life, a city of centuries-old history and incessant renewal is so multifaceted. This book also did not set itself the task of a comprehensive description of London. The main thing that its pages are devoted to is the story of the most artistically interesting monuments. This is not a city guide, much less an exhaustive catalog of its sights. Here, mainly only those things are mentioned that reflect the most important events in the history of England, the highest achievements of its culture and art. Talent and high skill, features of spiritual development and the very character of the people were surprisingly clearly manifested in these monuments. Often created many centuries ago, they bring great aesthetic pleasure to modern man and undoubtedly deserve attention as an important contribution of the English people to the artistic treasury of world culture.
