The chapters of this surprising novel are arranged not quite in chronology, but in the way the whimsical memory of the narrator built them. Critic Mark Amusin called Fright a fruitful attempt to recreate a beautiful and still working two-thousand-year-old myth by means of modern novel prose. The generalized image of an aged man of the sixties was seen in the "tenacious old man" by critic Viktor Toporov - and in turn predicted for him the vitality of a modern literary hero. In the large, voluminous chapter "The White House Without Politics" the reader will find a unique, in colors and details, depiction of the historical shelling of the White House in 1993, which, alas, has not been continued, not picked up anywhere else in modern stories and novels.
