To this day, little Nell's footsteps can still be heard walking along the cobblestones of Victorian London. She hurries home, to a dusty store, where she lives a mysteriously strange life with her grandfather. The old man disappears every night, spending time in gambling dens in the naive hope of winning a fortune. Instead, he keeps increasing and increasing his debts. Pawnbroker Daniel Quilp is furious when he learns that the poor old man will never in his life be able to pay off a huge debt. He not only takes over the antique shop, but also makes dirty inroads towards little Nell.
