This book contains the most complete text of the famous memoirs of Nikolai Ivanovich Grech (1787-1867) - journalist and publisher, writer and philologist, corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.

“Several times I was going to write notes about what I saw and heard in life... I accepted it a couple of times, but did not have the strength to continue... Now I think that this indecision came from the feelings of my youth at that time: the impressions were fresh, but not deep; opinions were decisive, but one-sided ; experience, with its heavy hand, had not yet crushed the ebullient and courageous soul; the dreams of pride and hope did not go away with the icy water. Moreover, many of the significant persons of my biographical drama were alive: portraits should have been painted, not memories; I would have had to shake hands with others , and after half an hour press it all, but not to the heart... I resume in the sixty-second year of my life what I started unsuccessfully in the thirty-fourth..."

This publication contains the memoirs of N.I. Grech "Notes about my life", prepared by combining the text of the book of 1886 (there were censorship removals) and 1930 (the notes there were restored from the manuscript, but other abbreviations were made). The features of the author's style have been preserved, but spelling and punctuation are close to modern ones.
