`Fatherland` (or Patericon) is a collection of short stories about ascetics, their teachings and sayings. Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov compiled his “Fatherland”, using the texts of the “Prologue”, “Philokalia”, making translations of Greek and Latin works contained in the multi-volume “Patrology” of Min. This book is about the lives of great ascetics, people of silence, fathers of the Church, monks of cenobitic monasteries, and hermits. Monks must imitate Christ, and we lay people must imitate monks, if we want to advance on the path to salvation. Examples of life and self-denial for the love of God, presented in abundance in this book, help to focus on the main task in the life of any person, put aside worldly worries, engage in self-purification, repentance, and preparation for that main and eternal life. Saint Ignatius was confident that if you master the patristic heritage, then “as one of one mind and one with the holy fathers, you will be saved.”
