FROM THE COMPILER: "Selected Poems of Foreign Poets of 1920-1960" is by no means an anthology that gives a detailed picture of the state of all foreign literature over the forty years of its existence. The present meeting has a more modest purpose. Our goal is to present only the main trends in foreign poetry, their style, mainly their ideology. By the force of events, foreign literature was divided into two periods. From the beginning of emigration (1920-1939), the so-called "Parisian note" was the leading trend. After the war, that is, from 1945-46. in the person of the poets of the “new emigration”, as well as the post-war generation of young émigré poets, new forces poured into the mainstream, which over time led, approximately in the fifties, to a new stylistic and ideological synthesis. The compiler sought to present both of these periods in general terms, choosing everything that is most characteristic of each of them. Under the name: "foreign poets" we mean poets who worked outside of Russia, in various - 5 - countries of our dispersion and took an active part in the life of foreign poetry. For this reason, from among the poets of the pre-revolutionary era who found themselves in exile, and also began to be published back in Russia, at least during the revolution, the compiler included in this collection only those who not only repeated themselves in exile, but also created something really new.
