The work of the late Father John Kologrivov, offered here to the Russian reader, originally arose as lectures given at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. The goal was, therefore, to acquaint young representatives of the Western religious world with the heights of Russian spirituality as fully and accurately as possible. Not only in the West, they usually have a very vague idea of ​​what Russian holiness is and how it manifested itself over a thousand years of Russian history: we have to admit that in Russia itself, only during the last pre-revolutionary decades, they began to pay due attention to the greatest values ​​of their own spiritual culture. Very many of them, which in the 19th century lay in vain, unnoticed or misunderstood, were rediscovered, as it were, and became the subject of very serious and thoughtful research work. In Russia, this work was then interrupted by events, not having had time to bear all its fruits, and could only partly be continued by individual Russian authors abroad.
