The book is based on a unique document — the diary of Dmitry Bergman, one of the hundreds of thousands of Russian Germans deported in September 1941 to the eastern regions of the country. Dmitry Bergman and his family were taken from the Republic of Volga Germans to a Siberian village, where he died of illness and starvation a few months later. The author began to keep a diary on the day the Decree on deportation was published, and the last entries were made 4 days before his death.
The diary was published in two languages: in the original and in translation into Russian. The translation was made by Ernst Bergman, the author's son; for publication, the translation and transcription were verified and refined.
