Historical Dictionary of Soviet Penitentiary Institutions and Terms Related to Forced Labor, with a foreword by Alain Besancon. It is of interest to those who study books about the Gulag, such as "The Gulag Archipelago" by A.I. Solzhenitsyn and other authors, where there are incomprehensible words for modern society from the Soviet camp past. The material consists of specific terms, official and unofficial; government regulations and decisions, published and unpublished. The material was collected by the author Jacques Rossi from 1937 to 1958 (Lubyanka, Butyrki, several dozen transit prisons, Norilsk camps, Alexander and Vladimir centrals) and from 1958 to 1961 in exile in Central Asia. Thousands of interviews were conducted with people they met there, including former Solovki, tsarist political prisoners, political prisoners and criminals of pre-revolutionary Russia.
