Joshu is one of the most beloved Zen masters. History knows many great masters, but none of them enjoyed such love as Joshu. Only a poet can do such a... great skill in carving buddhas from the stones of humanity.

... Strange methods, strange people. In no age could Zen have been a religion of the crowd. It could not become something like the Catholic religion: six hundred million people could not understand it. It is the religion of the chosen few, because it requires a big heart and a big mind, and this is the privilege of a few.

I'm introducing you to Zen for a very simple reason: all other religions have destroyed your laughter, destroyed your smiles, destroyed your creativity; they have destroyed even the sense of humour. And life without a sense of humor is not life at all.
