Using extensive documentary material and personal observations, the author told the truth about the heroic months-long defense of the Port Arthur fortress, artistically and authentically depicting the images of Russian patriots - Admiral Makarov, generals Bely, Kondratenko, many officers and soldiers. In 1944, A. N. Stepanov’s novel “Port Arthur” was republished in a second edition in a large print run and received nationwide recognition. In 1946, A. N. Stepanov was awarded the Stalin Prize for him.
