Волгоград - город герой

The city of Volgograd is known throughout the world. In a quarter of a century, the Soviet people twice had to defend it from their enemies. During the civil war, large forces of the white armies of generals Krasnov and Denikin were defeated near the walls of the city; during the Great Patriotic War, a 330,000-strong group of Nazi troops was surrounded and partially destroyed here. There are no ancient monuments in Volgograd, no masterpieces of architecture and art. But there are many historical places, monuments of heroic defense and memorial plaques telling about the courageous defenders of the city. Over two million people come here every year to pay tribute to the immortal feat of those who defended the freedom and independence of the Soviet Motherland in the deadly struggle against fascism, and to see the city reborn from the ashes and ruins.
