Thirty years ago, in April 1985, the Plenum of the CPSU Central Committee took place, at which M.S. Gorbachev announced a program of sweeping reforms under the slogan of “accelerating the country’s socio-economic development.” These reforms, as we know, led to the collapse of the USSR - to “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century,” as defined by V.V. Putin. Nikolai Ivanovich Ryzhkov in those years was the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, a member of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee. He is one of the main witnesses in the case of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The value of N.I. Ryzhkov’s testimony lies in the fact that, due to his position in the Soviet state, he knew many facts that were inaccessible to the general public. He argues that the economic crisis at the last stage of the existence of the USSR, the aggravation of the political situation, and the incitement of interethnic hatred were the result of the deliberate actions of the destroyers of a great power.
