Chrétien de Troyes (second half of the 12th century) - Medieval French poet, the most prominent French courtly epic, creator of the so-called Arthurian novel. He tried his hand at various poetic genres (the life of a saint, lyrics, retellings of Ovid). "Eric and Enida" was written around 1162. This is the earliest surviving chivalric romance about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. In a fierce battle, the young knight Erec won the hand and heart of the beautiful Enida. However, he soon heard accusations that he was mired in family happiness and forgot about his duty to perform knightly deeds. Offended, Erek went on a journey and performed many heroic deeds. At the end of the journey, the hero learned of the death of his father, returned home and received the crown from the hands of King Arthur. The plot is based on legends from the “History of the Britons” and “The Life of Merlin” by Geoffrey of Monmouth. In Klizhes, the heir to the Byzantine throne went to the court of King Arthur to comprehend the highest ideals of chivalry. It was in this novel that Chretien de Troyes formulated the main provisions of the code of morality, religiosity, nobility, selflessness and courage. Compliance with these rules was considered mandatory for every true knight in the 12th-15th centuries; it was on the basis of this code that our modern understanding of the concept of “knight” was formed. The poet made a dedication to the novel “Cliges” to Countess Maria of Champagne, more precisely, Marie de Champagne.
