A Florentine, a passionate patriot, expelled from his fatherland and slandered by triumphant enemies, unshakably convinced of his rightness both on the day of expulsion, and then, when during the years of wandering he called for punishing thunder on his Florence. This feeling animates his poem, and much in it will remain dark for the reader if he does not at least briefly know the fate of its creator and the historical background against which his life passed. Dante's triple poem, which arose at the turn of two eras, captured the culture of the Western Middle Ages in centuries-old images. It reflects all the knowledge of the Middle Ages with such completeness that contemporaries saw it primarily as a scientific work. All the beliefs of Dante's modern world are recreated in a harmonious, architecturally thought-out whole. All the passions of humanity of that time breathe in the verses of the Comedy: the passions of the inhabitants of the afterlife kingdoms, which did not fade even after death, and the great passion of the poet himself, his love and hatred.
