Count S.Yu. Witte (1849-1915) - the most prominent statesman of Tsarist Russia at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries, did a lot for the capitalist development of the country. His outstanding abilities were demonstrated in the posts of Minister of Finance, Chairman of the Committee and Council of Ministers, and in the diplomatic field. Witte is sometimes compared to Speransky and Kankrin, but he lived in a more complex era than them, and showed himself to be much more complete and versatile. ``Memories`` S.Yu.
