Thucydides - ancient Greek historian. In 424 BC. he was chosen as a strategist and, as a squadron commander, took part in the war with the Spartans in Thrace. Accused of treason for not promptly providing assistance to the city of Amphipolis, taken by the Spartans, Thucydides was forced to spend about twenty years in exile. Immediately realizing the importance of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides began collecting materials to describe it, visiting places that served as a theater of military operations. But he brought its description only to 411. In general, his “History” is characterized by a depth of political analysis of the events described, impartial truthfulness, keen observation and critical assessment of each reported fact.
