Volume 1. Settlement, land development and the natural environment in the Moscow region in the 12th-13th centuries

The book summarizes new data on a little-known element of the cultural and natural heritage of Moscow - the historical landscapes of the Old Russian period (XI-XIII centuries), studied in archaeological and paleogeographic plans. Such Moscow parks as Tsaritsyno and Losiny Ostrov, the Kolomenskoye museum-reserve, as well as the forest park belt of the capital appear thanks to this study as a diverse mosaic of landscapes that contain traces of human activity of the last two millennia. Microregional studies paint a picture of rural settlement, strategies for agricultural and commercial development of various landscapes: moraine uplands to the south of the city, the Meshchera lowland to the east of it, the floodplain of the Moskva River and the Yauza waterway. The appearance of the river valley is being reconstructed. Neglinnaya near the Kremlin in the 12th-13th centuries, where rural settlements coexisted with Moscow suburbs.
Maps and catalogs are published, including data on 300 archeological monuments of Moscow of the early Iron Age and IX-XIII centuries, a map-reconstruction of the natural landscapes of Moscow, as well as plans of ancient settlements and archaeological finds.

Volume 2. Domain of the Moscow princes in the city camps. 1271-1505

The monograph is devoted to the ancient possessions of the Moscow princes in the "Moscow city camps", which were co-owned by the dynasty (now the territory of Moscow and the forest-park zone in the central part of the Moscow region). The study of monastic acts, archaeological and historical landscape data made it possible to recreate the forms of land tenure of servants and "servants under the court", the structure of rural settlement, the strategy for the commercial and agricultural development of onboard volosts that lay in the Meshchera landscapes east of Moscow, and date the appearance of these structures to the 13th century .
The study of the domain of the Moscow princes, almost unaffected by patrimonial land ownership in the second half of the XIV-XV centuries, gives a vivid idea of the nature of the society that existed in the Russian North-East from the time of Alexander Nevsky to Simeon the Proud ("service organization").
The book is accompanied by an extensive reference apparatus, which includes, along with indexes, the publication of a set of data from the General Land Survey of the 1760-1790s. in the Moscow district and a catalog of archeological monuments of the second half of the 13th-16th centuries. on the territory of Moscow. Archaeological maps of micro-regions, plans of medieval settlements and archaeological finds are published.
